Designated Ministries of the Church
 
DEACONS...
Generally, the deacon is called to assist the ruling elders in their tasks, so that the elders may more efficiently attend to the ministry of the Word and prayer. In particular, deacons provide help for those in need or who have suffered loss through calamity, poverty, unemployment, illness or handicap. It is responsible for meeting financial needs, housing needs, family needs. The deacons are also called and equipped to minister to the spiritual and emotional suffering that accompanies need and loss. He will set up congregational programs and work with the presbytery and denomination diaconal ministries as well as other Christian organizations in the community, promoting the compassion of Christ to the prisoner, the sick, the jobless and the shut-in.
 
TRUSTEES (Ministry of the Facility)...
A facility that is conducive to the worship and service of the Lord and a witness to the community will be their particular concern. The trustees are responsible for the maintenance of the building itself, the grounds, the beauty and safety of it and the prevention of heating or electrical problems, using the church’s Building Fund. It will assume responsibility for the sound system, chimes and recording of the worship service. It will also coordinate Work Days for the congregation, arrange for professional repair as well as work with the organist or choir director in the tuning and repair of the pianos and organ. It will also handle financial matters that relate to the mortgage and insurance of the facility.
 
HOSPITALITY (Ministry of Fellowship)…
The aim of this committee is to enhance the worship and praise of our Lord in his church in a manner that is Biblically consistent and promote the communion of the saints through fellowship activities. Regarding the worship of God, it seeks to stir a spirit of adoration and holiness by enhancing the seasonal and special service themes approved by the session. It will care for the decoration of the sanctuary and arranging for flowers. It may work with the music director and the session regarding special events. Regarding the promotion of fellowship, it will work with the entire membership to help in arranging seasonal celebrations, church suppers and church retreats.

Ladies’ and Men’s Fellowship may work with the committee in coordinating their joint activities. Working with the session or deacons, it may also help coordinate preparing of meals and other acts of mercy to those in the congregation who are suffering or shut in.
 
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION (Ministry of Teaching)…
Promoting the knowledge of Jesus Christ to the congregation for its growth in the grace of God is the vision of the Committee of Christian Education. Under the chairmanship of the Sunday School Superintendent (who is appointed by the session), this committee will also oversee the work of Catechism. The entire committee will be comprised of the teaching staff of Covenant Sunday School and Catechism departments. Working with the pastor and session, it will be the interest of the committee to order materials for their respective ministries. Working with Hospitality Committee, it may set Sunday School Picnics, or arrange for special visiting speakers.
 
OUTREACH COMMITTEE…
The Outreach Committee continues the work of Christian Education with a view to extending the knowledge of Christ through other means. One of the chief methods of reaching out is the Vacation Bible School, so it will be the responsibility of the Outreach Committee to secure a VBS Coordinator. Literature that is approved by the session will be made available on the Book Table. The Library will be kept in order and added to through this committee. Tape and CD communications will be catalogued and made available to extend the ministry of the Word. The Covenant Website will be maintained and updated to make Covenant’s entire ministry known to all who access it.
 
MISSIONS LEADERSHIP TEAM (Ministry of Missions)…
The promotion of the Gospel of Jesus Christ beyond the borders of our own land is the vision of the Missions Leadership Team. This will be done by keeping all our OPC missionaries (and any others we may elect to support) always before the congregation including the children in Sunday School. Working with the denominational Committee on Foreign Missions, it will keep the congregation informed of the missionary letters and arrange for visiting missionaries on furlough when available and arrange for short-term missions for those who are interested. It may also strengthen missionary interest by conducting missionary conferences, showing special presentations and receiving special offerings. With approval of the session, the committee may extend its support to other missionary fields and works, as well.
